New South Wales RHD Control Program

The New South Wales (NSW) RHD Control Program aims to reduce the burden of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease in the NSW population. The objectives of the Program are to:

  • improve clinical care for people living with acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease including delivery of secondary prophylaxis antibiotics.
  • provide disease education and training for the health workforce, individuals, families, and communities.
  • maintain a dedicated statewide patient register and recall system for acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease.
  • provide data for national epidemiological reporting.

The Program works closely with primary health care services to improve awareness of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease among the health workforce.

Notification Form

Medical Practitioners have a legal obligation to notify all cases of acute rheumatic fever, and cases of rheumatic heart disease up to 35 years of age according to Schedule 1 (Scheduled medical conditions) and Schedule 2 (Notifiable Diseases) of the NSW Public Health Act 2010.
